Activity completion suite

Note: This collection is part of the Learning analytics collection, and supports the use of the UOW Subject Site Template.

The activity completion suite of learning analytics tools provide a simple, visual method for tracking students’ interaction with activities and resources in a site consisting of three main parts:

Activity completion functionality

Activity completion can be turned on per activity or resource. Students and teaching staff both see a visual indication of the activity completion settings beside the activity or resource on the site page.

A visual indication of activity completion is also provided in the Site index for students.

Completion progress block

This block is visible to students and also teaching staff with specific Moodle user roles (Site Coordinator, Teaching Staff, Non-editing Tutor, and Non-grading Tutor). For students, the completion process block allows them to see their progress in completing activities and resources on the site. The block contains an additional button for teaching staff with the Moodle user roles mentioned above, which, when clicked, displays a report of the completion progress for all enrolled students in the site, with the option to sort by student.

The completion progress block can display all activities in the site, or can display only specific activities set by teaching staff.

Overview of students and activity completion reports

The overview of students report is associated with the completion progress block, and displays a filterable view of the information displayed on the block, allowing you to view the progress of multiple students at once.

The activity completion report provides an overview of which students have completed certain activities. It is visible only to teaching staff with specific Moodle user roles (Site Coordinator, Teaching Staff, Non-editing Tutor, and Non-grading Tutor).

Why?

The activity completion suite is one of the most powerful learning analytics functions built into the UOW online learning environment. It can be used to:

  • identify if content or activities nominated as pre-work have been done
  • view interactions with additional resources or practice activities – for students needing or wanting additional resources or support
  • provide students with a measurement of attainment towards subject completion.

The activity completion suite can be very helpful in determining what students interact with (i.e. click on) in your subject site. It is important to remember, however, that interaction data obtained through the activity completion suite does not provide information on students' cognitive engagement with the content; for example, students might click on a resource to view it, but this metric does not provide the level of information needed to determine whether the student has understood the content.
