Accessibility

Note: This article is part of the collection, Inclusive learning & teaching.

At its core, accessibility focuses on increasing access to learning experiences (e.g., activities and resources in a subject site) and improving navigation. Accessible learning experiences have the potential to benefit all students.

A universally accepted set of standards, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, also commonly known by their abbreviation WCAG, are available to measure the accessibility of online content.

Inclusive design

Supporting the University of Wollongong's Accessibility Action Plan, a collection of resources on Inclusive learning & teaching is available.

When a learning experience has been designed inclusively, it is inherently accessible. Inclusive design provides simple strategies to go beyond compliance with standards and cater for the full range of human diversity.

The Inclusive learning & teaching collection includes articles that expand on the definition and purpose of inclusion in online content and experiences, as well as provide practical guidance on designing inclusive experiences.

Brickfield Accessibility Toolkit

In addition to this design first approach, the Brickfield Accessibility Toolkit is available via the Learning Platform to find and fix accessibility issues in your site.

Additionally, Brickfield provides staff and students with the ability to request and generate materials from the site in alternate formats, providing the flexibility to engage with the materials in a manner which best suits their need at the time.
