Student perspectives: The impacts of genAI
Generative artificial intelligence (genAI) and the impacts this technology is having on higher education learning and teaching environments, is rapidly dominating conversations and discussions by academics and administrators around the world.
However, whilst the genAI conversation continues, there is one important voice that must be recognised and heard. That voice is that of our students.
Note: While the views expressed in this video capture a range of student perspectives at the time of filming, they do not necessarily represent the broader UOW student body or reflect the university’s position on GenAI use.
“If you were more friendly towards AI, maybe incorporate that as part of the curriculum... be more sensitive about it and eventually just come to the terms that it's more of a tool.”
Speaker 1:
AI's here now. So the more we use it, the more it'll learn about us, but the more we'll learn about it.
Speaker 2:
It should be only used as a helper tool to guide you or maybe narrow down your research field, right? Not, not to use this as a result or an end goal.
Speaker 3:
With my comms and media, I've learned a lot of classes actually want us to use it for some assignments, like to help us generate an understanding of a certain topic.
Speaker 4:
Not all the information that is provided is accurate. However, it can be used as a means of providing further clarity.
Speaker 5:
If you were more friendly towards AI, maybe incorporate that as part of the curriculum you know, be more sensitive about it and eventually just come to the terms that it's more of a tool.
Speaker 6:
I don't think it has that personal kind of connection like that tutors and lecturers have.
Speaker 7:
Even I ask a very stupid question, <laugh> give the best answer.
Speaker 8:
We're gonna use it for like, main points and stuff, and then we'll look into all those main points and like do further research about it instead of like, just rely on AI.
Speaker 9:
I think it sort of, the line hasn't been drawn yet between what's real and what sort of fantasy in this land of AI.
Speaker 10:
It's quite innovative, which I like. That would definitely play a much larger part in university life.
Speaker 11:
Like it's, it's good to come up with ideas and to help as a starting point to build upon and then do your own research. So I've, I've seen it as a pretty useful tool for me in my studies.
Speaker 1:
And then I think we can maybe use it in universities to maybe make the experience of certain degrees or certain things to learn a bit more digestible for people.
Speaker 3:
Chatgpt will definitely shake things up.
